After the huge success of the Temagami Canoe Route guidebook in 1978, Hap Wilson ventured beyond the normal parameters of nature writing and produced his first river guide in 1987. “Riviere Dumoine, a comprehensive guide for the adventuring canoeist” went into great detail in describing each rapid and portage location by his now trademark art maps. The guidebook was later incorporated into a broader guidebook, “Rivers of the Upper Ottawa Valley”. This premier river guide is still the go-to resource for running the river. The cover art on the now “vintage” guidebooks was very popular. As an artist, Wilson makes several test-runs for cover design in order to get the colour and design right. These are known as ‘artist proofs’ and valued for their imperfections and uniqueness. The vintage books have become collector items.
