The Yukon and Northwest Territories is filled with tales of seeking gold, first explorers perils and legends
“that will make your blood run cold”.to quote Robert Service.
It is a must the winter before NWT canoe or road trip adventure to read a few of many books about the early travellers.
Here are four very different books in that vein
1 Gold Diggers by Charlotte Gray is a fun read about the Klondike Gold Rush and Dawson City where many stop before a Bonnet,Wind, Hart or Snake River Trip
2 Unravelling The Franklin Mystery by David Woodman is a more scholarly read about one of the northwest passages great mysteries which Parks Canada is now documenting.
3 The Polar Sea is John Franklins actual journal of his trips 1825-1827 complete with maps and historic photos.
(Did you know Franklin paddled by the mouth of the Dumoine!)
4 Company of Adventurers Vol 1 by Peter Newman is the first of a two part history of the Hudson`s Bay Company. This is the history of the near north where one company ran a fur monopoly and ruled a territory called Ruperts Land .
All four combine to weave a story of the european discovery and exploitation of pre confederation Canada
